Earth Day is about coming together as one people, recognizing and appreciating our neighbors — the entire family of cultures, ethnicities, and religions — who dwell on our planet. More than 1 billion people in 192 countries will participate in activities to celebrate this special day.

This year’s Earth Day theme is INVEST IN OUR PLANET — focusing on natural processes, green technologies, and innovative thinking to restore the world’s ecosystems. Here are some simple changes you can make to celebrate Earth Day:

  • Donate clothes to an organization like Dress for Success or a homeless shelter
  • Pick up trash in a neighborhood park, schoolyard, or vacant lot
  • Plant a garden and grow your food
  • Plant a tree and watch it grow
  • Google “Earth Day activities” in your city — and volunteer your support
  • Save water by turning off the faucet when you brush your teeth
  • Wash at least one load of laundry in cold water each week
  • Turn off the heat-dry function on your dishwasher
  • Use cloth towels instead of paper towels
  • Switch to reusable bags for food storage
  • Go for a walk — and appreciate the world we live in
