DEI Committee Update:
Our DEI committee recently completed its first survey to determine which Employee Resource Groups our staff might be interested in joining as members or as an ally. We’re currently compiling the results and will share those with you soon.
Hispanic Heritage Month in October:
Hispanic Heritage Month began as a commemorative week in 1968, championed by President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988 President Ronald Reagan expanded the observation to cover a 30-day period, and in 1988 it was enacted into law.
The celebration begins September 15, which is significant because it’s the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and it runs through October 15.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a celebration of the rich histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Each year, people across the US recognize this month with festivals including music, food, dance, art exhibits, movie nights and story readings.
This year’s theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” It encourages us to ensure that all voices are represented and welcomed to help build stronger communities and a stronger nation.
